Reality Show for City of South Fulton Government?
The City of South Fulton's female-led Court System was featured on HBO's Vice series.
After garnering national attention for its female-led justice system, including a HBO Vice special, Hollywood has come calling to South Fulton. Chief Judge Tiffany Carter Sellers, Solicitor Ladawn Blackett Jones and Public Defender Viveca Powell have signed an exclusive deal with Good Caper Content, the crime reporting division of ITV America, for an unscripted docuseries about South Fulton's Municipal Court. The series is currently in development, and producers are shopping for a television network to air the reality TV show.
While some denounce the move, worried about negative depictions of African American women in reality TV, others are excited by the possibility of a show. "Even though we're making history as Georgia's fifth largest city, the same size as Atlanta, and the Blackest City in America, many of our own residents still haven't heard of our new city." explains Councilman khalid. "This could put us on the map, and offer a chance to educate the masses on the court system and South Fulton's approach to restorative justice." |

Fulton County Demands $1 Million from City to Complete Old National Sidewalks; Millions More for Other Improvement Projects |
2018 -- Some projects, such widening of Old National's sidewalks, and extending them to Highway 138 at the end of Fulton County, are not on the T-SPLOST project list. There is a second list of additional street projects called Capital Improvement Projects.
These projects were not funded by Sales Taxes; and Fulton County alleges that South Fulton must "chip in" 20 percent of the total costs of such projects for them to be completed. According to Fulton County, South Fulton's 20 percent obligation to fund these projects is over $7 million dollars. Though the sidewalks on Old National from College Park to Flat Shoals Road are nearly complete, Phase II of the side walks — from Flat Shoals to Highway 138 — has not yet begun. Funding for this phase of sidewalks is over $1 million. However, according to Fulton County Public Works Director David Clark, only about $210,000 is needed in 2018 to purchase right-of-ways from Flat Shoals to Highway 138, with another $138,000 due for other allegedly unfunded projects throughout the city. View more details on this story in khalid's Budget report, and a complete list of funding requests for such projects below. |

STACEY ABRAMS VISITS 2ND ANNUAL SOUTH FULTON ELETORAL COLLEGE
Councilman khalid's South Fulton "Electoral College" is an annual Day of Political Education where attendees can take classes about local & state government and question candidates running for office. Last Saturday's day-long event began with a class explaining each constitutional amendment, referendum & local question on the November Ballot (there are over 20 items to vote on besides Governor & Lieutenant Governor).
The class was followed by forums with candidates from multiple political parties running for statewide offices. Candidates took questions from South Fulton residents. South Fulton middle school students got to question State Superintendent candidate Otha Thornton. The highlight for many, however, was the appearance of Stacey Abrams at a Town Hall moderated by WSB-TV 2's Tyisha Fernandes. Abrams was greeted with a step show by the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, ending with the entire audience — including several state officials — doing the "wobble."

After learning about ballot items and questioning the candidates, dozens of Electoral College "students" cast ballots at a Saturday Early Voting Location right across the street. The annual event is the brainchild of South Fulton City Councilman khalid, America's first #BlackLivesMatter organizer elected to public office. The idea came to him when he learned of shockingly low rates of voter participation in the city.
"This goal of this event, in conjunction with our Election Day Holiday and other initiatives I am introducing are to encourage a culture of voting in our ctiy." explains Councilman khalid.
